First Post!
Hey guys and gals. So I am finally done with my weekend of work and I can start blocking my shot now, woo. I was looking to see if anyone could provide me with some notes on the composition of my shot. Last week a lot of the fixes had to do with clarity and presentation of my idea (and the acting, which I am working on).
I kind of whipped together a Malcolm mod too so if you have any notes on character design or making him appear a bit more geeky, that would be awesome. I think the glasses add to the character, and are appealing, but since this is a facial exercise I would understand if you think I should remove them.
Idea: I wanted to capture a moment that is relateable but endearing. My idea was that this shot would show the moment when the geeky guy of the class finally gets picked first for a game (dodgeball in this case). The shot will open with him catching the ball, looking incredulous, and then kind of melting into super excited/happy.
Here is the composition. I wanted to have him surrounded by taller players to crank up the contrast, but let me know if it's too on the nose.
Thanks in advance. Happy Animating!
Brandon

I like the idea! I don't know that you need two players in frame with him to make this read, I think your poses/acting will sell the idea more than having those other bodies in there will.
ReplyDeleteMaybe you haven't gotten too super into posing this guy yet but the pose itself doesn't feel like a geeky guy who's not used to handling a ball. Does that make sense? If you're going for super geek, I feel like if I were him I would hold it as if I wasn't comfortable handling it. Have you ever seen the show Freaks and Geeks? There's a great scene (can't remember which episode, where they play dodgeball). http://uproxx.files.wordpress.com/2013/03/freaks-and-geeks-dodgeball.jpg this image feels pretty accurate to how a geek would catch it, I think. I hope that helps! Cool idea!
Nice, awesome find on the pic! Yeah this was kind of his default pose atm. I will take you and Tyler's suggestions and really push it in the acting. I think I will bring in a couple of different compositions with my blocking. I liked the idea of the bigger guys there, because I was going to have him glance at them during the scene, but it may just be simpler to have him catch the ball and the shot only be about him.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the awesome thoughts. I'll see what I can come up with, hehe.
Oh yeah! I bet you could insinuate there are other people there by having him look up and offscreen at them, we don't have to see them to understand who he's looking at. The way he looks at them would clarify that there are others there. But yeah I just looked it up, the dodgeball scene is in the pilot episode, the show's on Netflix and youtube if you wanna watch that part! No geek gets picked first in it but I bet it's full of awkward poses to get inspired!
ReplyDeleteCool stuff, Brandon! Elissa gave you some good feedback and reference already. I think the setup you have in my mind could work. The glasses will be a good prop to help play up his geeky-ness - they can partially come off as he catches the ball and cause him to readjust them, or he could just be interacting with them throughout. I like the idea of the main character looking up nervously at his two more able-bodied peers. Good start!
